Mangala Charan Mantra for Protection
At Winter Solstice in the early 70's YogJi sent the then teacher from Toronto to a meeting we were having and told us Yogiji wanted us to include Mangala Charan Mantra after we chanted Adi Mantra at morning Sadhana to protect him from all the "negativity" we were processing. (Shiva Singh Khalsa) We would not typically use it to tune in to a general yoga class although it may be appropriate when starting a workshop.
We use Mangala Charan Mantra for protection. For example he instructed us to chant it when ever we are starting our car and to create a zone of protection around the four corners of the vehicle (See Below). We often will chant it silently when ready for take off while traveling by air. It is said something can be proven if it repeatedly has the same result. This is one of them. It gets you out of your monkey mind before you drive away.
Before You Turn the Key! Yogi Bhajan’s Advice for Drivers:
"When you put the key in the car, and you start it, you have started. Give yourself 11 feet by chanting first:
Ad guray nameh (From the left)
Jugad guray nameh (From the back)
Sat guray nameh (from the right)
Siri guru dayv-eh nameh. (In front)
Wahe Guru ji ka Khalsa
Wahe Guru ji ki Fateh!
(I bow to the Primal Wisdom, I bow to the Wisdom of all the ages, I bow to the True Wisdom, I bow to the great invisible Wisdom. My purity belongs to the Infinite, all victory is the Infinite's.)
"Then start, right? If you take a moving car and measure the distance created by the period you chant, over time it is 11 feet. Kaal means time. Desh means space. The law is, if time and space—kaal and desh—don’t meet, things can’t happen. Good and bad, you give yourself 11 feet of distance. You are 11 feet short." - Yogi Bhajan
Mangal Charan Mantra/Aad Guray Nameh is the 2nd mantra we sometimes use when tuning in.
Aad Guray Nameh Jugaad Guray Nameh Sat Guray Nameh Siri (see-ree) Guru Dayvay Nameh
Below is a beautiful musical version by Snatam Kaur Khalsa.
I Bow to (or call on) The Primal Wisdom I Bow to (or call on) the Wisdom Through the Ages I Bow to (or call on) the True Wisdom I Bow to (or call on) the Great Transparent Wisdom Within. As with many mantras we are "activating" the energy of those sacred word sounds.
Hands are held in Prayer Pose with Palms together, Thumbs, resting on your heart chakra and Fingers pointing up. And we can put this, mantra 3 times around ourselves right before we practice or teach Kundalini Yoga.
