Kundalini Yoga - Legacy Teachers SA to SE

This section starts with Kundalini Yoga Master Teacher Sada Sat Kaur Khalsa and ends with Sewa Singh Khalsa. NOTE:

Legacy Teachers are all of those early students of Yogi Bhajan who sat at his feet, who were personally chiseled by him, and who deliver his teachings today. Until recently, this crusty group of greying middle-agers and senior citizens was affectionately referred to as "the old-timers."

Maybe they're not so old. Didn't the Master tell us that age is measured by flexibility of the spine? Many of the so-called old timers have very flexible spines. These early pioneers of our Dharma were sent by Yogi Bhajan to teach Kundalini Yoga all over the world. They opened ashrams, led spiritual communities, and inspired people through their lifestyle and their devotion to Yogiji's teachings. They stood the test of time and the test of the fire of the Master's personal touch.

Research Interests

The major focus of my research interest lies in the field of Mind-Body Medicine. Specifically, I am interested in the evaluation of the clinical effectiveness and basic psychophysiological mechanisms underlying the practice of yoga and meditation techniques. These behavioral techniques include specific manipulations of respiratory frequency and tidal volume, maintenance of body postures and stretching exercises, and meditation, which involves relaxed control of attention in a manner that precludes ruminative thought. Ongoing studies include the evaluation of yoga for treatment of PTSD and mental health benefits of yoga in public schools.

I am currently conducting research studies on the treatment of primary insomnia with yoga and meditation techniques which involve both subjective and objective polysomnographic evaluation of sleep quality in randomized controlled trials as well as concurrent evaluation of psychophysiological measures including cortisol, catecholamines, melatonin and heart rate variability. I am also interested in the potential effectiveness of these techniques in insomnia secondary to other conditions such as depression, anxiety and fibromyalgia and in other sleep disorders.

Sat Kartar Kaur Khalsa CA

Sat Kartar Khalsa has been teaching, facilitating, recording, and performing chant music and devotional kirtan (music sung in call and response style) for almost 30 years. Her personal journey with these potent spiritual tools was initially orchestrated, in 1971, when she stumbled upon Kundalini and Naad Yoga, Indian classical music, and Sikhism, and became a student of her spiritual teacher, Yogi Bhajan.

At a retreat 4 months later, she had a heart awakening, while chanting, that she had never known with any other music. She began chanting with Livtar Singh in yoga classes, and various events in Atlanta, and they went on to sing in two early chant bands, Sat Nam East, and the Khalsa String Band, which, in the 70s, toured internationally in India, Canada and the U.S.

During her first trip to India, in 1974, while on tour, Sat Kartar began what would be a life long study of North Indian Classical kirtan (call and response devotional singing) with numerous Sikh ragis ( who sing in Eastern mystic scales).

Sat Kartar recalls, " My first experience of chanting was being mesmerized with the sound of this yoga teacher, named Livtar Singh, who was singing these words over and over to someone named Guru Ram Das (4th Guru) while playing a drone instrument called a tamboura. " I felt as though I had opened Pandora's Box on a mysterious unknown world of sound." Sat Kartar went on to sing in 2 Sikh spiritual bands, Sat Nam East, one of the first American chant groups, and later the Khalsa String Band.

In the mid-seventies, she began what would be a life study of Northern Indian classical kirtan, with numerous Sikh musicians, called Ragis ( who sing devotionally in Eastern raga scales). "I wanted to bring the enchantment of this world of music to an American audience in a simpler, sensuous form, so Westerners could appreciate the haunting beauty of these ancient scales."

In 1984 and '85, collaborating with veteran New Age producer Liv Khalsa, they created 2 timelessly beautiful recordings, "Spirit in Blossom" and "Domain of Shiva," a group of hymns from the sacred Sikh texts, containing 4 raga scales. Symphonically orchestrated and ahead of its time, this music found a new audience, in the early stages of the World and New Age Music movement.

Chant Music, Ethereal Journey, Listen, Flow, Daily Practice.

She teaches people about the Shabd Guru and Naad Yoga and leads Sacred music events, has been doing so since 1971.

Kundalini Yoga teacher training did not exist in its current form until late in the 1980's.

A student of Yogi Bhajan's was directed to start teaching as soon as The Master felt that he or she was ready. Yogi Bhajan always told us that he came to America to train teachers not to collect students.

Sat Kartar began teaching Kundalini Yoga in 1975 and became KRI Certified through a testing process created for those who taught in the early years of 3HO.

I have now been an activist for most of my life. I will be 62 this year, and have been an activist of one kind or another for about 40 of those years. - organized the first demonstration on the west coast against the war in Vietnam - started the War Resister's League West.

My friend Wavy Gravy refers to himself, these days, as a "temple of accumulated error." I can well resonate with that description. In all this time, The primary question which has motivated and inspired my work these last years is: What can I do, by myself or working with others, that would make a difference as to whether or not humanity will survive on this planet of ours?

Along the way Ihe organized the first demonstration on the west coast against the war in Vietnam - started the War Resister's League – West - was a manager of the Grateful Dead - have been practicing and teaching Kundalini Yoga for over 30 years - have been Western Regional Director for 3HO Foundation & Sikh Dharma - coordinated numerous Meeting of the Ways Conferences - started Creating Our Future - founded Rainforest Products These days I live in an Ashram in East Bay (San Francisco Bay Area) - lead yoga workshops both here and where invited - conduct an annual Kundalini Yoga Teachers Training Course - continue to be involved with Rainforest Products.

I am working with Ram Dass and others, through Creating Our Future, on one of my primary concerns, the relationship between inner peace and world peace, particularly the critical role of spiritual practice in the evolution of human consciousness.
